• Meter Technician

The Village of Glen Ellyn Public Works Department is recruiting for four (4) temporary Meter Technician positions. The duty of this position is to change out the meter interface units (MIUs) from a touchpad to a radio read unit at each residential and commercial location in Glen Ellyn. This is part of the Village's process to update the meter reading technology from a walk-to-read system to a fixed network system.

The position is responsible for visiting each location that currently has a touch pad MIU and upgrading that to a radio MIU. The position must be able to use maps and reference the provided list of locations for finding and replacing each touchpad. Locations will vary from the front, side or back of a house and can include uneven terrain and other variables to reach. The position requires the ability to use a handheld device to read and reprogram the meter, as well as knowledge of basic hand tools to remove/install the MIUs, including connection of wiring. The position also accurately completes paperwork and computer work associated with each change out and also is responsible for communicating any problems with equipment or reporting any unsuccessful conversions.

Applicants must possess a high school diploma or equivalent at the time of application. Previous work with water meters or knowledge of the water industry is a plus, but not required. Candidates must possess and maintain a valid Illinois motor vehicle driver's license. The work schedule is Monday-Friday, 7:00 am to 3:30 pm, and applicants are expected to work a full 40 hour week for the duration of the position., weather permitting Applicants must be able to communicate effectively with residents to answer any questions about the work and be able to handle occasionally stressful situations, i.e. animal control issues.

Candidates should possess basic math skills and be able to effectively communicate both orally and in writing. Ability to work outdoors in wind, rain, cold, heat, etc. is also a must. Applicants will demonstrate the ability to develop positive associations with coworkers and customers alike.

The duties of this job include physical activities such as stooping, kneeling, standing, reaching, climbing, walking, lifting and/or moving (up to 25 pounds), grasping, pulling/pushing, twisting, talking, hearing/listening, seeing/observing, occasional typing, and repetitive motions. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance and peripheral vision; depth perception; and the ability to adjust focus. Work environment is primarily outdoor work in various types of weather conditions.

The pay offered for this temporary position is $15.81/hr with no fringe benefits. The duration of this job will not exceed 1,000 hours.
